Thursday's Children 10/11/12 Thoughts on Halloween

I'm taking a break from my Dwelling Places Series because...
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Christmas is nice enough, but personally I MUCH prefer Halloween. No presents, no pressure, and the holiday meal is...CANDY.

Here's part of my Halloween Stuff Collection
The skull was purchased in London and is extremely realistic looking.  It raised a few eyebrows going through Gatwick Security.
The other head is a sculpture I did at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston.
His name was Charlie.
At this time of year I get to revel in all things Gothic. And nobody thinks it's all that strange.

On Halloween, adults are allowed to be children again, or something even scarier.

Here I am as Lucrezia Borgia, you can't see it in this photo of a photo but I had a lovely little cut crystal ampoule in my hand with a mysterious white powder.  (Alright, alright, it was baby powder).
I made the dress from a tablecloth.
My "date" was the illustrious Marquis de Sade
We were returning from the dead, hence the zombie-esque makeup.  ScaryMatchdotcom
Actually, we ended up getting married. On Halloween. The bride wore black.

Initially this post was simply an ode to Halloween. It didn't really fit the Inspiration Theme.
But then I realized something.
The dressing up and pretending to be scary/scared is all about the fun of being someone else for a night. Writing gives me that same thrill.
I explore different worlds, live different lives, and at the end come home, safe and sound.
This is what drives, or inspires, me to write.
Whew, that worked out quite well after all.

What inspires you to write?

This week I started off the Halloween Inspiration Relay-
I am passing the torch (or Jack O'Lantern) to the lovely Kristina Perez and she will blog about Halloween next week. There are plenty of pumpkins to go around, so feel free to stick with the Halloween Inspiration theme if you want-but if Halloween isn't your thing, that's okay too.

And because Halloween provides a good enough excuse for a gratuitous cute doggie pic...
Daisy-Mulan
I think she's managed to look fairly dignified. Or maybe she's plotting revenge. Can't be sure.

  1. Lol, I love the picture of your dog! We dressed our dog up as an angel, complete with wings and a halo every Halloween before she died. :( She was super cute. Great post, Rhiann.

Oh, and *nudge nudge* check out my recent post. You'll find out why. ;)

    1. Yay! I knew it was simply a matter of twisting your arm forcefully enough :)

  4. Awesome post, I love Halloween too, and used to get crazy with it but the boys grew out of it, and hubby's not interested.

I'd do your blog hop, but I don't know what else I can put on my plate, still I will come back and read and comment and if I can fit it in, join.

Great idea by the way. Love the photo's, costumes and inspiration.

    1. October is crazy with writing stuff, isn't it? If you can't make it this week, or even this month, I hope you'll squeeze it in during November! We'd love to have you join any time. And remember, pictures are especially useful when you don't have time to put together lots of words :)

  5. I absolutely adore that you not only got married on Halloween, but that you also wore black. You're pretty much my hero! :D

  6. Well, originally we wanted more of a costume party wedding. Unfortunately some family members wouldn't go along, so dressing in black was the next best thing, along with getting married in the dark under a weeping willow tree :)

  7. I love Lucrezia Borgia. She is wicked cool. I like her even better now as a zombie! (Btw, have you been watching the new Borgias series?) I posted a picture of myself as Marie Antoinette at age 10 on my blog yesterday and there's another one of me as the Spider Woman coming up. You're totally right that dressing up is a way of exploring parts of ourselves that might otherwise remain hidden. That's definitely what we do with our characters, isn't it? Love exorcising those demons ;-)

    1. I haven't seen the Borgia series, we have only basic cable. Is it good? I did see you as the child Marie Antoinette, adorable! Liked your mom's idea with the lipstick. Now, back to exorcising, so much more fun than excercising, lol.
